Indian club faces ban for refusing match venue

By Felix Kuyinu

The Asian Football Confederation, AFC, has banned Indian club, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, from all its competitions for refusing to play at a match venue in Iran.

The AFC slammed the enforcement alongside a $100,000 fine on the club after it failed to show up for an Asian Champions League match against Sepahan, sanctioning them for the next edition of the competition.

The club were also hit with a $50,000 fine and ordered to pay $50,729 for damages and losses incurred by the AFC and Sepahan while trying to organize the fixture.

The body, in a released statement on Friday, declared all matches involving the club in the competition null and void.

The side had requested the AFC to change the match location, citing lack of security assurances and medical insurance coverage, but their request met an outright rejection.

The Indian outfit also failed to travel to Iran last year for a match against Tractor SC, a day after  a missile was fired against Israel.
