IGP deploys special squad after Plateau community attackers

By Awoniyi Ademide

In response to the spate of deadly attacks that have ravaged communities in Plateau State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the urgent deployment of tactical squads and surveillance assets to boost security in the affected areas.

Egbetokun also directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, Kwazhi Yakubu, to proceed to Plateau State and take charge of the security operations.

Yakubu has been tasked with leading a multi-agency security operation backed by additional tactical units, including Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), police helicopters, drones for aerial surveillance, Police Mobile Force units, and Special Intervention Squad (SIS) personnel.

In a statement issued by the force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Wednesday, this development marks enforcement agency’s efforts to restore peace and safety across the state.

“This decisive action underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to restoring peace, ensuring the safety and security of all residents, and bringing perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice,” he said.

“These resources will be strategically deployed to conduct special operations aimed at effectively curbing the incessant attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) and surrounding communities, which have tragically resulted in the loss of innocent lives,” Adejobi added.

It will be recalled that the violence in the state began on March 28, when gunmen stormed communities in Bokkos Local Government Area, killing several residents and injuring many others.

The attacks have since escalated, leaving scores dead, countless injured, and displacing entire communities, with many more left traumatized by the violence and brutality of the assailants.

Earlier, the DIG paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Government House in Jos, where they engaged in discussions on enhancing security measures and fostering cooperation between the state government and law enforcement agencies.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to assess the situation firsthand, delve into the root causes of the attacks, and collaboratively develop a sustainable, long-term solution to the unlawful killings.

During the meeting, Yakubu delivered the Inspector-General’s condolences to the victims’ families and the entire state while assuring of the forces devotion to intensify security measures in the affected areas.

He further reiterated the force commitment to work closely with the Government, community leaders, security agencies, and stakeholders to restore lasting peace to the region.
