Residents of Chuskon community in Maiduguri breathed a sigh of relief after operatives of the Borno State Police Command successfully disarmed an unexploded ordnance, preventing a possible explosion that could have caused serious harm.
The explosive device, suspected to have been planted to cause damage, was safely rendered harmless by police experts, ensuring the safety of lives and nearby infrastructure.
The unexploded ordnance was discovered by residents beneath a telecommunications mast at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area of Maiduguri.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Nahum Daso, the operation followed a report received at about 11:06 a.m. through the Divisional Police Officer of the ITE Police Division.
“The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of the Naziru Abdulmajid, has recorded another operational success with the recovery of an Unexploded Ordnance in Maiduguri, thereby averting a potential explosion and threat to public safety,” Daso said.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Commander of the EOD-CBRN Base 13 team to mobilise and proceed to the scene.
“The EOD-CBRN team swiftly responded, cordoned off the area, and, in line with standard operating procedures, successfully rendered the device safe,” he added.
Preliminary assessment revealed that the UXO, which had two protruding wires, was deliberately placed by unidentified persons. Items found at the scene included one pair of plier, a T-shirt, and a pair of shoes.
Following the successful operation, the police conducted sensitisation and safety awareness activities in the community, urging residents to remain vigilant.
“The Commissioner of Police has charged all Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and fortify critical public and private assets, especially communication facilities and other sensitive infrastructure, to prevent acts of sabotage and ensure sustained public safety,” Daso stated.
He reassured the public of the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that investigations are ongoing.
“While investigation is ongoing, the situation has since been brought under control, and normal activities have resumed in the area. Members of the public are also advised to remain vigilant,” he assured.
