Hoodlums clash in Plateau hours after curfew relaxation

Tension has resurfaced in Jos, the Plateau State capital, following a clash involving suspected hoodlums shortly after Governor Caleb Mutfwang lifted a curfew imposed to contain earlier deadly attacks.

The incident sparked panic across parts of the city, with residents, traders, and commuters fleeing for safety as shops and businesses quickly shut down amid fears of further violence.

The unrest occurred on Wednesday morning around Terminus Market and adjoining communities in Jos North Local Government Area, where a confrontation among suspected hoodlums escalated into widespread disorder.

Rumours of fresh killings further heightened the situation, spreading rapidly across Angwan Rukuba, Gada Biu, and Farin Gada areas.

Eyewitnesses said some youths took advantage of the chaos to barricade roads and loot shops, while residents scrambled to secure their homes and property.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the clash may have stemmed from a disagreement near Farin Gada Market, which allegedly resulted in the death of two women, further aggravating tensions in the area.

The development comes hours after Governor Mutfwang relaxed the 48-hour curfew initially imposed following a deadly attack that claimed several lives in parts of Jos North.

Security operatives have been deployed to the affected areas to restore order, while authorities urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.

Despite the intervention, tension remains high across the city, with fears of possible reprisal attacks lingering among residents.
