At least three residents have been shot dead by gunmen in a late-night attack on Koro community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, near the border with Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The assault followed earlier reports of gunfire between Koro and Eruku, heightening tension and fears of escalating violence in the area.
According to residents, the heavily armed assailants ambushed members of the Kemberi community, opening fire without warning and forcing many to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
“It was sudden; people didn’t even know where to run,” a survivor told correspondents on Tuesday morning after the attackers, suspected to be bandits, fled the area.
Some residents alleged that criminal elements have increasingly used the dense Ogbe Forest as a hideout, launching cross-border raids along the Kwara–Kogi axis before retreating into the bush.
“These forests give them cover, making it almost impossible for us to defend ourselves,” another community member said.
The community has called for intensified security measures, urging coordinated intervention by both state and federal authorities to prevent further bloodshed.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies in Kwara and Kogi states had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
