At least two people have died alongside others severely injured after a group of unidentified gunmen attacked a community in Kogi State, causing unrest in the area.
A resident alongside a member of a vigilante team were said to have died on the spot after being hit during a sporadic gunshot dwell between the invaders and a local security team who had a confrontation with the gunmen to foil their initial plan on the area.
The insurgents were said to have initially targeted students but their plan was thwarted when the community’s hunters and vigilantes engaged them, forcing the gang to flee under pressure.
The terrorists, however, re-enforced back to Aiyetoro Kiri, a suburb in Kabba-Bunu local government, where the incident happened on Wednesday, firing gunshots in a boisterous manner after which they were challenged by the community’s security outfit which caused the mishap for the deceased.
The council chairman, Zacheus Dare, lauded the swift intervention of the vigilantes, adding that their presence prevented mass killing and abduction.
”Two people, a hunter and another resident lost their lives to stray bullets at the Kiri High School, but no student was killed,” Dare said.
”A team of soldiers, police officers and local hunters are combing the forest to track down the bandits.”
The incident has renewed calls for increased security presence around rural schools in Kogi, the communities calling on the government to intensify its efforts to combat insecurity in the country.
