Atleast 20 traders were reported to have been killed and dozens of others sustained varying degrees of injuries when gunmen attacked a market in Sokoto State.
It was learnt that the traders that sustained injuries during the attack on the market around Ungwan Lalle in Sabon Birni Local Government Area were currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital within the community.
As gathered, other traders that suffered life-threatening injuries during the attack that lasted for several minutes on Saturday were taken to the state capital for proper care.
Speaking after the attack, a former council chairman of Sabon Birni local government, Abdullahi Tsamaye, who confirmed the casualties figure to newsmen, explained that the assailants came in large numbers into the market and started shooting sporadically, aiming at anybody in sight.
The former council boss added that the gunmen also set vehicles ablaze and destroyed several other properties worth millions of naira within and around the market.
The Special Assistant to the Minister for Police Affairs, Idris Gobir, who also confirmed the incident, said about 22 people died during the attack that occurred in the state.
Gobir further said about 35 people including traders from neighbouring towns were currently in various hospitals receiving treatment after sustaining injuries during the attack.
