Atleast 73 schoolchildren were reported to have been kidnapped when gunmen attacked Government Day Secondary School in Kaya, Maradun Local Government, Zamfara State.
The schoolchildren were said to have been taken away from their school by the gunmen, who came in large numbers into the premises during the attack.
As gathered, the bandits invaded the school at about 11am on Wednesday and left with a yet-to-be ascertained number of students from the premises.
Confirming the abduction, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mohammed Shehu, said that a large number of bandits invaded the school and took the students to their hideout.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ayuba Elkanah, has deployed a search and rescue team to work in synergy with the military to free the pupils.
the Police spokesman noted that Elkanah has met with the affected students’ parents and has appealed that they “exercise patience and continue to pray for the success of the ongoing rescue operation”.
In a bid to prevent further abduction, Security agencies have also been beefed up at Kaya village and environs to forestall further attacks.
