Gunmen kidnap driver conveying corpse in Kogi

By Awoniyi Olajide

A group of gunmen suspected to be bandits intercepted a vehicle transporting a corpse, abducting the driver while leaving the body and the car abandoned on a highway in Kogi State.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Ojodu Ojakeshi area of Ofu Local Government Area when the armed men ambushed a blue Golf 2 car en route from Kwara to Benue State.

Two passengers onboard the vehicle were said to have managed to escape during the attack and later reported the incident to security operatives in the region.

“We were transporting a corpse from Kwara to Benue when suddenly the gunmen jumped out of the bush and attacked us,” one of the escaped passengers recounted to police officers.

Following the report, commuters and eyewitnesses alerted security operatives, prompting a swift response from a joint team of army troops, police officers, and local hunters who arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

“We received a distress call about the attack. On getting here, we saw that the assailants had taken the driver but left the corpse and the vehicle on the highway,” a police source revealed.

The police further disclosed that a coordinated bush-combing operation is currently underway to locate and rescue the abducted driver. Authorities have also vowed to track down and arrest the perpetrators responsible for the attack.

Regarding the abandoned vehicle and corpse, the police confirmed that the body has been transferred to a hospital mortuary within the community, while the car remains in police custody as part of ongoing investigations.
