Governors rally supports for Tinubu’s re-election

Governors from the Southeast region are reported to have thrown their support behind President Bola Tinubu, with plans underway to formally endorse him and rally support for his second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As gathered, the governors plans could further cause rancour among the opposition parties ranks as they gather to form a coalition to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the president.

The plan by the opposition followed recent waves of political endorsement amongst APC members and the defections to the party ahead of the next general election in the country.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this in a special interview for the forthcoming State House documentary marking President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office.

Umahi disclosed that all Southeast governors, regardless of party affiliation, are united in backing the President, citing ongoing infrastructure developments and renewed federal presence in the region.

“All the governors in the South East are working with Mr. President. We are even planning a summit to bring all leaders in the region together to formally endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 election,” Umahi said.

The former governor of Ebonyi State urged prominent regional figures, including opposition leader and former Anambra governor Peter Obi, to join the movement for the good of the Southeast.

“Leadership is not about self it’s about service. If someone else is doing what you would have done for your people, support him. I call on my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, to align with the President and be part of the summit,” he added.

Umahi praised President Tinubu’s administration for its focus on inclusive development, noting that the Southeast has witnessed unprecedented federal infrastructure projects under the current government. He highlighted key roadworks including the Port Harcourt–Enugu, Enugu Abakaliki, Enugu Onitsha, and Onitsha-Owerri highways, as well as the Second Niger Bridge, for which the President has paid 30% of the cost.

“Before, Ebonyi State lacked any real federal presence. Today, under President Tinubu, we have at least four ongoing federal projects in the state,” Umahi said.

The minister also gave updates on national infrastructure projects, particularly the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. According to him, Section 1 of the project—from Ahmadu Bello Way to Lekki Deep Sea Port—is over 80% completed and will be tolled starting in December.

“By December, we will begin tolling Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. This project is more than just a road; it’s an economic corridor equipped with solar-powered lighting, CCTV, and carbon credit infrastructure,” he said.

Umahi noted that other sections of the highway are advancing steadily, including newly flagged Sections 3 and 3B in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. He emphasized that the project will be economically self-sustaining and transformational for regional trade and connectivity.

He also shed light on other legacy projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Trans-Saharan Trade Route, and the proposed Ogun-Ondo-Niger Corridor
