Gbajabiamila clears N53m medical bills for Lagos patients

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila settled outstanding medical bills totaling ₦53 million for admitted patients across hospitals in Lagos and also presented cash gifts to mothers of newborns, including the first baby of 2026.

The gesture, which took place at various health facilities across the state, was motivated by the Yuletide spirit and the recognition that many patients are unable to afford their medical bills amid the current economic challenges.

Speaking during the visit yesterday, the COS said the gesture was not only in the spirit of the season but also in realization of the fact that many patients were not in a position to meet their medical expenses at this critical time.

Gbajabiamila first visited the Gbaja Maternal and Child Care Centre, Surulere, where he welcomed babies born on New Year’s Day and presented cash gifts to mothers of newborns.

Baby Yusuf, a male delivered at 12:01 a.m. via caesarean section and weighing 3.7 kilogrammes, was the first baby born at the facility in 2026.

Received by top officials and staff of the centre, the Chief of Staff presented a cash gift of ₦500,000, alongside other items, to Mrs. Jumoke Yusuf, the baby’s mother.

The Chief of Staff later proceeded to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, where he visited patients receiving treatment.

At LUTH, Gbajabiamila settled the medical bills of indigent patients totaling ₦33.6 million, while bills amounting to ₦8.6 million were cleared at the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Iyun, Surulere.

The Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemi, who received the Chief of Staff during the visit, expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of compassion and responsive leadership.

Adeyemi said the intervention was particularly timely, noting that it came at a period of severe financial strain for many patients and their families, and would significantly ease the burden of medical expenses while improving access to care for the indigent.
