The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation into allegations of illegal car racing and stunt driving by youths, warning that such behaviour poses serious risks to motorists and other road users.
The agency described the reported activities as unacceptable and potentially hazardous, emphasizing that public highways are not designated for competitive racing or exhibition driving.
According to the FRSC, complaints have been received from residents reporting unusual vehicular movements believed to involve speed contests and reckless manoeuvres.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Corps Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide confirmed the development, stating, “Yes, I will not deny the fact that we have heard about such activities which is illegal or quasi-illegal.”
He disclosed that the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, directed the Sector Commander in the Federal Capital Territory, Felix Theman, to examine the claims and submit a report for necessary measures.
Ogungbemide noted that the accounts from residents were not entirely consistent but maintained that any verified incident would amount to a breach of traffic regulations, adding, “Legally, we do not have Formula One running as a regular sport on Nigerian roads, so if such is happening, then it will be compromising the safety of other road users, because it is not legal.”
He further stated, “The corps has not granted permission to any organisation or group to conduct car racing or stunt driving on roads within the territory,” emphasising that enforcement steps would follow once findings are concluded.
The corps reaffirmed its commitment to road safety nationwide and urged the public to continue supplying credible information to support ongoing monitoring and compliance efforts.
