Four migrants die after boat mishap in Turkey

At least four bodies have been recovered and six others declared missing after a migrant boat capsized in the Aegean Sea.

The ill-fated rubber dinghy was reportedly carrying 14 Afghan nationals and one Iraqi citizen when it sank off the coast of the Karaburun district, a coastal area in western Turkey.

Meanwhile, three other migrants were rescued during a search-and-rescue operation launched by the Turkish Coast Guard after the boat went down near the Greek island of Lesbos.

As gathered, the coast guard was alerted after two of the 15 migrants managed to swim to shore to seek help, prompting a swift rescue operation.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the coast guard said the search would continue with the aid of a helicopter, drone, and larger vessels to cover the area more effectively.

Many migrants attempt the short but perilous journey from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands such as Samos, Rhodes, and Lesbos, which serve as entry points into the European Union.

Although the number of crossings has decreased in recent years, many migrants still try to reach Greece from Turkey, hoping to eventually make their way to other parts of Europe.
