The Nigerian Police, Lagos Command has arrested and detained no fewer than four officers found to have been extorting commercial drivers and residents across the state.
As gathered, the law enforcement officers deployed to Maroko Division were seen in a viral video extorting residents around the Lakki axis of Lagos.
Following the discovery of their wrong action in the video, the Commissioner of Police for the state, Hakeem Odumosu, was said to have directed that they be arrested and detained immediately to serve as a deterrent to others aiming to embrace such actions.
The Commissioner’s directives on the officers alleged to have extorted Lagosians were revealed through a statement by the Command spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, on Thursday.
While condemning the action and describing it as an inglorious act, the Commissioner of Police vowed to deal decisively with any police officer found acting in an unprofessional manner.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a video going viral on social media exposing some Police officers in Maroko Police Division extorting money from a citizen.
“Peeved by the unprofessional conduct of the officers as captured/revealed in the video, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, directed that the erring police officers should be identified and arrested immediately.
“In compliance with the directive, therefore, all four police officers have been arrested and detained. They are currently facing disciplinary actions”.
