Four die, five missing after Indonesia landfill collapse

At least four persons have died alongside five others missing following a collapse of a waste landfill in Indonesia.

The collapse, caused by a heavy drenching of an overnight rain, was said to have caused the casualties trapped, alongside several vehicles and makeshift food stalls under tons of garbage.

However, following the mishap which has at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility at Bekasi community in Jakarta, four people managed to escape the scene unscatched, while efforts are ongoing to get the persons.

The collapse struck around 2:30pm local time, engulfing garbage trucks and nearby vendor stalls where people were working or resting, according to the national search and rescue agency

The held of one of the local rescue agency, Geg Bahari, said that the rescue team including more than 200 personnel supported by heavy machinery such as excavators and tracking dogs are have been deployed since yesterday to painstakingly search through the unstable debris for any signs of survivors or additional victims.

The collapse struck around 2:30pm local time, engulfing garbage trucks and nearby vendor stalls where people were working or resting, according to the national search and rescue agency, BASARNAS.

Victims identified so far include garbage truck drivers Dedi Sutrisno and Irwan Suprihatin, along with food stall owners Enda Widayanti (25) and Sumine (60), highlighting the vulnerability of informal workers at the site.

The disaster underscores persistent concerns over overburdened landfills in the Jakarta metropolitan area, where sites like Bantargebang frequently face capacity strains and instability risks exacerbated by seasonal rains.
