Former NTA staff joins Ogun governorship race

A former staff member of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Modele, has declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement of intent addressed to party leaders, members, and stakeholders in Ogun State, Modele said her decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultation,” adding that she is offering herself as a candidate committed to integrity, competence, and continuity.

She noted that her declaration was deliberately made through a public statement to reflect responsibility and transparency rather than political spectacle.

According to her, Ogun State stands at a critical point where growth must be carefully managed to ensure inclusive development, stability, and continuity.

“Ogun State is blessed with industry, intellect, culture, and strategic relevance to the nation. Yet blessings alone do not guarantee progress. Progress requires deliberate leadership, balance, and trust among our people,” she stated.

Modele, who previously contested the governorship in 2022 but did not secure the party’s ticket, said she accepted the outcome at the time without destabilising the political structure.

She emphasized that her renewed ambition is not driven by unfinished business but by what she described as a changing political environment that requires measured leadership.

Addressing concerns about her relationship with Governor Dapo Abiodun in the statement issued on Thursday, she maintained that she enjoys a cordial relationship with the governor and other party leaders, stressing that her aspiration is not designed to undermine existing leadership but to preserve stability while improving governance outcomes.

On agitation from Ogun West over zoning, she acknowledged that the concerns are legitimate but cautioned against approaches that could destabilise the state.

The former broadcaster also warned against populist politics, noting that while it may mobilise support quickly, it could undermine governance and investor confidence if not properly managed.

Modele further acknowledged the gender dimension of her candidacy, noting that Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor. She, however, stressed that her ambition is rooted in competence and capacity rather than symbolism.

“Nigeria has never elected a female governor, and I am aware of the weight of breaking that ceiling. However, this is not about symbolism; it is about competence and preparation,” she said.

Highlighting her qualifications, Modele cited her Master’s degree in Public Administration, years of experience as an award-winning journalist, and professional background in both the public and private sectors as assets she would bring to governance.

She pledged to pursue result-oriented leadership focused on consolidating Ogun’s industrial growth, empowering youth, modernising infrastructure, strengthening security, and deepening trust between government and citizens.

“I am not presenting myself as the loudest option but as the safest option,” she added, promising a consultative but firm style of administration.

Modele said she would continue consultations within party structures in the coming weeks and expressed hope for an orderly and credible primary process.
