A section of the Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja highway, a major road network in Benue State, was submerged by floodwaters just hours before President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit, disrupting the movement of vehicles, passengers, and commuters across the state.
The highway, a major access route to Makurdi, is currently underwater following continuous rainfall since last night, bringing all activities along the route to a standstill.
Eyewitnesses confirmed to The Guild that the volume of floodwater made it impossible for vehicles to proceed, forcing many travellers to abandon their journeys or seek shelter in nearby towns.
Meanwhile, the flooding has cast uncertainty over President Tinubu’s planned stop in Makurdi, where he is expected to pay a condolence visit to families affected by the deadly attacks in Yelewata later today.
As of the time of filing this report, government officials and security personnel were still finalising last-minute logistics for the visit.
However, with the highway now blocked, there is growing concern over how the president’s motorcade will reach the affected communities, as no official detour or alternative route has been publicly confirmed.
