flood has left hundreds of families homeless after relentless rainfall submerged entire neighbourhoods, destroying homes, schools, and key infrastructure, and forcing emergency evacuations across several communities.
The disaster has disrupted normal life for thousands, as rescue teams work to provide urgent relief to displaced families.
Many residents are now in temporary shelters, counting their losses and anxiously awaiting assistance from government authorities and humanitarian partners.
As gathered, the flooding occurred after two days of heavy rainfall between September 4 and 5, severely impacting communities in the Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), Usman Mazadu, a joint assessment revealed that 545 families had been displaced and 171 houses damaged across multiple locations.
“Kigo Road was the worst hit, with 69 buildings affected and over 270 households forced to evacuate,” Mazadu said.
“Even a private nursery and primary school, Merits Kids Academic School, was not spared by the floodwaters.”
He noted that other affected communities included Rifin Guza, Shooting Range, Kabala Costain, Bashama Road in Tudun Wada, and Ungwan Rimi, where a connecting bridge to Libreville Road was washed away, as well as Malali G.R.A.
“We are documenting every affected household to ensure help reaches the right people,” Mazadu explained. “Our priority is providing temporary shelter, food, and medical support to those displaced.”
Mazadu added that beyond immediate relief efforts, the state government is developing a recovery plan aimed at rebuilding affected communities and reducing future flood risks.
He also confirmed that displaced residents currently taking refuge at Girls Primary School, Kigo, have been assured of continued government support until normalcy is restored.
