No fewer than six passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries after a commercial bus they were travelling in overturned along the Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle corridor, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki.
The fully loaded painted Volkswagen commercial bus, with registration number KRD 436 XF, was conveying passengers alongside household items when it reportedly suffered a sudden brake failure while in motion.
The mechanical fault caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, leading to the bus overturning on the bridge.
As a result of the crash, six passengers—two men and four women—sustained serious injuries, while one of the victims suffered a critical eye injury.
Confirming the accident on Monday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officers, who were on routine surveillance duties in the area, promptly responded to the scene.
“Through a well-coordinated emergency response, all six injured victims were successfully extricated from the wreckage. Demonstrating commendable civic responsibility, well-meaning Good Samaritans swiftly transported four of the injured passengers to an undisclosed medical facility for urgent treatment.
“In parallel, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Adekunle Division, rendered crucial assistance by conveying one male victim who sustained multiple fractures to a hospital for intensive medical care. Additionally, operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) administered immediate on-site medical attention to another injured passenger at the scene of the incident,” the statement said.
Commenting on the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended his sympathies to the injured passengers and their families, while wishing them a speedy and full recovery.
He also cautioned motorists, particularly commercial transport operators, against vehicle overloading and stressed the importance of regular mechanical checks, with special emphasis on braking systems, before embarking on any journey within or outside Lagos State.
Giwa reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property on its road networks, warning that acts of avoidable negligence and mechanical irresponsibility would continue to attract strict regulatory sanctions.
