Fire gut electronic market in Anambra State

By Asuquo Cletus

An early morning fire gutted parts of the Electronics Parts Market in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

The blaze, which broke out at around 9 a.m., affected at least five shops located on the upper floor of a one-storey building housing dealers in electrical appliances and electronic components.

Although no casualties were reported, the incident left several traders counting heavy losses, with wares reportedly accumulated over many years reduced to ashes.

One affected shop owner lamented on Wednesday: “I had just restocked my shop twice before the tragic incident occurred.”

Eyewitnesses said the cause of the fire could not be immediately determined but suspected a power surge. Electricity supply to the affected section was promptly disconnected to prevent electrocution and further spread of the blaze.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Fire Service said its personnel responded quickly to a distress call and were able to contain the fire.

State Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa said firefighters and equipment were immediately deployed to the scene.

“The affected building is a one-storey structure. The fire consumed about five shops upstairs, which contained electronics and parts. The good news is that it has been controlled, and there was no loss of life. Many shops upstairs and downstairs were saved,” he added.

Chiketa further stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation and advised traders to install fire extinguishers in their shops as a precautionary measure.
