Fire destroys goods worth millions in Kano market

Traders are counting their losses after a massive fire destroyed three large stores at the popular Singer Market in Kano, resulting in significant damage to goods and property worth millions of Naira.

It was learned that the fire started at about 1:00 a.m. and spread rapidly, engulfing the three stores before it was brought under control.

According to sources on Monday, the inferno destroyed the shops and the commodities stored inside them, despite the swift response of firefighters and all efforts to quench the blaze.

Narrating the unfortunate incident, which has left shop owners in shock as the cause of the fire remains unknown, a trader who was unable to salvage his goods said the intensity of the fire made it impossible to rescue most of his stock.

“We arrived and found thick smoke everywhere. Almost everything in my shop was already gone,” one affected trader said.

Confirming the incident, the Kano State Fire Service explained that their personnel worked for hours to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

“Our men acted promptly and were able to confine the fire to a section of the market, which saved many other shops,” the service’s spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, said.

He added that the agency is yet to ascertain the exact number of affected shops and the total value of goods destroyed.

“We are still conducting investigations to determine the extent of the damage, but we successfully extinguished the fire,” he added.
