The Federal Government has unveiled a ₦1 billion reform initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s agricultural education system to enhance food security, create jobs, and drive economic growth.
The investment forms part of ongoing efforts to reposition the agricultural sector, which has been undermined by persistent insecurity.
The announcement, made on Friday through the Presidency social media account, marks a significant change in agricultural education across Nigeria’s universities and colleges.”
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the initiative would introduce a modernised curriculum across tertiary institutions nationwide, aligning agricultural training with current industry demands.
According to him, the reform represents a significant shift from largely theoretical instruction to a more practical, skills-driven approach.
He noted that between 60 and 70 per cent of the programme will focus on hands-on training in key agricultural sectors, ensuring that graduates are better equipped to tackle real-world challenges.
The initiative will also promote inter-ministerial collaboration to strengthen workforce development, boost productivity, and support sustainable agricultural practices across the country.
The government added that the reform forms part of broader efforts to reposition the agricultural sector as a key driver of national development and economic resilience.
