FG disburses N152bn to contractors after protest

By Marycelia Agim

The Federal Government has confirmed the payment of N152 billion to contractors for verified contracts, even as indigenous firms resumed protests demanding payment of trillions of naira in outstanding debts.

The development comes amid allegations by contractors that the government has failed to settle obligations for completed capital projects, despite repeated assurances and recent budgetary provisions. Many insist that substantial balances remain unpaid, particularly for local firms.

According to the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF), all payments follow proper verification processes to ensure accountability and protect public funds. Contractors argue that delayed payments undermine operations and create liquidity challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Dada Olusegu, a presidential aide, confirmed the development on his social media account on Thursday, noting that the process of contract payments went through “various verification procedures in line with extant laws and regulations, to protect taxpayers’ money and ensure accountability and transparency.ā€

The ministry also acknowledged the strain caused by delays, adding: ā€œWhile the Ministry acknowledges the financial strain the delay in payment has caused contractors, we also plead for continuous dialogue and engagement for effective resolution of all conflicts.ā€

Indigenous contractors resumed protests on Monday, demanding payment of what they estimate to be about N4 trillion owed for 2024 capital projects. They claim these funds relate to projects that were fully executed, inspected, and certified by relevant government agencies.

A similar demonstration was staged in December 2025 when contractors accused the government of reneging on earlier commitments. In August 2025, Finance Minister Wale Edun disclosed that over N2 trillion of 2024 capital expenditure obligations had already been settled.

The Ministry reiterated that adherence to due process remains non-negotiable in managing public finances, stressing that verification procedures safeguard transparency, proper use of funds, and accountability in all contract payments.
