The Federal Government has urged Nigerian citizens in South Africa to exercise caution and avoid public discussions amid rising tensions in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape, following the installation of an Igbo monarch.
The High Commission of Nigeria issued the advisory, emphasizing the need for vigilance and careful behavior to ensure the safety of nationals.
It advised citizens to avoid interactions that could escalate conflicts and to steer clear of demonstrations or counter-protests.
Issued yesterday in Pretoria, the advisory urged Nigerians to limit movement, respect local laws and customs, temporarily suspend socio-cultural activities, and refrain from making inflammatory statements that could heighten tensions, particularly on social and mainstream media.
Citizens were also advised to maintain a low profile, remain law-abiding, and avoid unnecessary displays of wealth or flamboyance. They were further warned to stay away from demonstrations or counter-protests.
Nationals were encouraged to report any threats to life or property to local security agencies and to seek guidance from the High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg.
“All nationals should consult the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg for clarification on safety measures where necessary,” the statement added.
