FG approves 10megawatts power plant for Imo

By Esther Kalu

The Federal Government has approved construction of 10 Megawatts hydropower generating plant at Otamiri and Nworie rivers axis of Imo State.

As gathered, the plant was approved as a measure to ensure residents and business owners get uninterruptible power supply and generation within Owerri Metropolis and beyond.

The State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who confirmed the approval, said that the inadequate power has been a challenge for residents of the affected communities

Uzodimma added that the approval of the power plant was by the central government after it was discovered that the part of the state had been without power supply for many weeks.

The governor, who announced the approval during the 62nd Independence Day Thanksgiving Mass, yesterday, in Owerri, the state capital, noted that the plant approval by the federal government was a dividend of democracy, which the state was privileged to enjoy.

The governor, meanwhile, commended the federal government for approving the dredging of Orashi River into the Atlantic Ocean and plans to float the Orashi free trade zone for oil and gas.

Uzodinma noted that over $1.5 billion was invested in Orashi River project and part of the benefits was to create jobs opportunities for the people.

“With an initial $1.5b foreign investment, this will translate to much more than 300,000 job and economic opportunities”. he added.

Uzodinma further appealed to citizens of the state again to shun violence and arms bearing in order to address marginalization.
