A former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, has been hospitalized after slumping in Abuja.
Maina was said to have lost his footing and collapsed while walking into his office while trying to enter his office, hitting his head on the floor after which he was rushed to the hospital for immediate medical intervention.
The incident, which happened yesterday, was linked to complications arising from a long-standing knee injury the victim is suffering from, as related by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, on Wednesday.
Ekwe said that Maina is in a private hospital in Abuja, where he is currently receiving intensive medical attention under close supervision by doctors.
Confirming the incident, the aide said, “Dr Abdulrasheed Maina slumped while attempting to access his office premises. The fall followed complications from an untreated knee injury, which led to him hitting his head on a staircase,” he said.
He added that doctors are monitoring the condition of the victim and also advised that an air ambulance evacuation may be considered if his health does not stabilize within a short time.
“He remains under observation, and his family has appealed for prayers, understanding and privacy during this period,”Ekwe noted.
Maina, in November 2021, was convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja over offences of laundering N2.1bn in pension funds and sentenced him to eight years imprisonment, a verdict upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023.
He was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre in February 2025 after benefiting from statutory remission for good conduct, a development that reignited public debate due to the scale of the pension fraud case linked to him.
