Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and may join Rabiu Kwankwaso and other political figures reportedly aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Aondoakaa confirmed his resignation in a statement, explaining that the decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political allies, and supporters.
He added that prevailing circumstances compelled him to step aside from the ruling party.
“This decision follows careful reflection and wide consultations with my family, political associates, and supporters,” he said in the statement released on Sunday.
“While I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of the party at various levels during my membership, prevailing circumstances have made it necessary for me to take this step in the overall interest of my people and democratic values.”
Moreover, the former minister expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as the leadership being provided at the national level.
“I wish to express my profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the visionary leadership he has continued to provide for our nation,” he said, while also assuring the president of his continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Furthermore, Aondoakaa acknowledged the role played by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in shaping the political structure of the APC in Benue State.
“I deeply appreciate the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Dr George Akume, for the quality leadership he has provided to the APC family in Benue State,” he said. “I acknowledge his role in shaping the political landscape of our dear state and assure him of my enduring respect.”
The former attorney-general also thanked party leaders and members across his political base for their support over the years, describing the relationships and experiences gained as invaluable.
However, he urged his supporters to remain calm and peaceful, stating that a new political direction would soon be communicated.
“At this critical time, I call on all my supporters and associates to remain calm, peaceful, and steadfast. A new direction aimed at salvaging and repositioning Benue State in the best interest of our people will be communicated in due course,” he said.
The Guild reports that Aondoakaa’s resignation took effect from March 28, 2026, and he served as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice between 2007 and 2010.
