Eight passengers die in Niger highway bomb blast

At least eight people have died after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, destroying a bridge and striking a passing vehicle.

The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, is believed to have been caused by explosives planted by suspected terrorists.

The blast severely damaged the bridge linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities, a vital route for residents and traders, particularly those travelling to the Babana border market.

Sources said the victims were travelling in a vehicle moving between Nuku and Woro when it triggered the IED, resulting in a devastating explosion that killed all seven passengers, including the driver.

Although no terrorist group has claimed responsibility, the incident underscores the persistent security threats in the area posed by suspected armed groups operating nearby.

Meanwhile, a similar IED explosion was reported earlier the same day in Woro, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where several people were also feared killed.
