Edo police hunts youngman after pouring acid on lover

By Marycelia Agim

The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for Timothy Gilbert, who allegedly poured acid on his girlfriend, 40-year-old Angela Ogah, during a violent dispute that left her hospitalized and fighting for her life.

The incident occurred at Ihovbe Quarters in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, during a quarrel between the couple, during which Gilbert allegedly perpetrated the act before fleeing to avoid accountability.

Ogah’s lawyer, John Izagaegbe, said the victim is still receiving treatment in a private hospital and her condition has left her barely able to speak.

“We want the suspect to be arrested. The victim is in severe pain. She could barely talk when journalists visited her,” he said, stressing that Gilbert had fled after allegedly attacking her with a substance suspected to be acid. “We are urging the authorities to effect his arrest without delay,” he added.

Izagaegbe also revealed that a formal petition had been submitted to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, requesting immediate intervention to ensure justice.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, Edo Command spokesperson Moses Yamu said the police have begun investigations to trace, apprehend, and prosecute the culprit.

Yamu noted that investigators had established the estranged couple had been experiencing recurring disputes over alleged infidelity.

“The Command has commenced a manhunt for the arrest of the suspect, and I am confident he will be brought to justice,” he said.

He also urged individuals in troubled relationships to walk away rather than remain in abusive situations, adding: “Love is not by force.”
