Ebonyi court remands 30yr old man after killing mother

A Magistrate Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has ordered the remand of 30-year-old Oforbuike Damian following allegations that he fatally stabbed his mother, Onyema Damian, at their home.

The youngman was remanded after investigations indicated that his stabbed his mother with a knife, resulting to her death in Ukawu, Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

As gathered, the incident arose from a family dispute over Damian’s request for his mother to perform a spiritual bath for him and to open a barbing salon for his brother, requests that allegedly escalated into violence.

After the attack, Damian was said to have fled the community to avoid been held for his act, but was later apprehended by villagers and handed over to the police.

The Police Directorate of Legal Services, led by Chinagorom Eze, promptly arraigned Damian before the Magistrate Court in Abakaliki.

According to the charge sheet, he allegedly caused the death of his mother by stabbing her with a knife, an act punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ebonyi State.

During proceedings, Damian appeared without legal representation and admitted to the offence.

Presiding Magistrate Chinedu Agnma ordered that Damian be remanded in a correctional centre pending further legal action. The Magistrate also directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to take over the case, noting that the Magistrate Court lacks jurisdiction to try murder offences.

The case has been adjourned to April 9, 2026, for further proceedings in the appropriate court.

Authorities have urged community members to remain calm and allow the legal process to run its course while investigations continue.
