The Department of State’s Service, DSS, has arrested a female suspect, Halima Umar, over accusations of possessing firearms illegally in Plateau State.
The DSS claimed that Umar was caught with 302 rounds of live ammunition, the arms which she reportedly was about to deliver to a notorious bandit leader in order to carry out insurgent acts on residents in the area.
During a court trial against the alleged offender yesterday on charges of illegal possession of ammunition, which she pleaded guilty to, the agency called two witnesses and also tendered the recovered ammunition, the investigation report, the defendant’s statements and money recovered from her as evidence before the court.
Following her guilty plea, the presiding judge, Jaywa Yilwatda, adjourned the case until May 8 for sentencing.
Security officials have said that the arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the DSS to dismantle arms supply networks linked to banditry and terrorism across the country.
It added that the operations underscore the ongoing efforts to disrupt arms supply chains linked to banditry and terrorism in Nigeria,” the source said.
