A devastating accident has claimed the life of a driver and left three others severely injured on the Secretariat end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The tragic event unfolded when a Toyota Sienna, with the number plate KTU 666 JP, veered off the road due to apparent loss of control by the driver.
It was learnt that the vehicle was reportedly traveling at an excessive speed, leading to the fatal crash.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofeeq.
He said, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a grievous lone vehicular accident involving a Toyota Sienna (KTU 666 JP) at Conoil, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”
He continued, “This tragic occurrence, which transpired earlier today, resulted in the untimely demise of the driver, while three other occupants—two males and one female—suffered severe injuries.”
The Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) swiftly responded to the scene, administering critical first aid before rushing the injured victims to the Lagos State Accident & Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
During rescue operations, LASTMA officials recovered N48,200, a mobile phone, and 15 sachets of alcoholic gin from inside the wrecked Sienna. The presence of these items corroborates suspicions that alcohol played a significant role in the accident.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers were also present at the scene, overseeing the evacuation of the deceased’s remains to a morgue in Yaba. Meanwhile, LASTMA operatives promptly towed the damaged vehicle to their yard to prevent any further traffic disruptions.
Expressing deep regret over the tragic incident, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
He wished the injured victims a swift and full recovery while issuing a stern warning to motorists about the perils of drunk driving.
He stated, “Reckless and impaired driving is a perilous menace to lives and property. We urge all drivers to avoid consuming alcohol before or while operating a vehicle. Lives are precious, and we must take every measure to protect them.”
