Cross River Govt places ban on scrap business

By Asuquo Cletus, Calabar

Cross Rivers Government has announced the immediate suspension of all scrap-related activities across the State following what it describes as an alarming surge in vandalism and the destruction of public infrastructure.

According to the government, the suspension covers all forms of scrap dealing, including trading, scavenging, transportation and related operations within, into or out of the state.

In a statement on Monday, the state government said the decision became necessary after investigations and security reports allegedly established a link between scrap dealers, scavengers and the increasing cases of theft and damage to critical assets.

The statement, signed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Charles said essential public utilities, road installations and community facilities had been deliberately targeted, resulting in service disruptions, economic losses and threats to public safety.

The government stated that Governor Bassey Otu had directed an immediate review of all laws, policies and regulatory frameworks governing scrap-related activities in the state.

“As an urgent interim measure to halt further damage, restore order and safeguard state and private assets, His Excellency has approved the immediate suspension of all scrap-related activities in Cross River State for an initial period of six months,” the statement read.

It warned that any individual, group or entity found violating the directive would be dealt with in accordance with the law and face appropriate sanctions.

The government also mandated law enforcement agencies and relevant security bodies to ensure strict compliance and enforcement of the order.

Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of public infrastructure and private property, the state government called on residents and stakeholders to cooperate with authorities to prevent further sabotage of critical assets.
