Court remands labourer for stealing maize

By News Desk

A Magistrates Court sitting in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has ordered that a labourer, James Joseph, be remanded in a correctional centre for stealing maize from a farm.

The Nigeria Police Force had charged the 30-year-old labourer with theft and brought before Magistrate A. A. Ayeni for hearing of the suit.

In her ruling on Thursday, Ayeni ordered that Joseph be remanded in Ile-Ife Nigeria Correctional Centre, pending sentencing. Ayeni, however, adjourned the case until September 23 for sentencing.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Emmanuel Abdullahi, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 3, 2021 at Ogudu Village via Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said that the defendant stole maize worth N63,000, property of Olarewaju Johnson.

He said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace when he trespassed into Johnson’s farm.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 249 (d) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
