An unidentified commercial motorcycle operator popularly called Okada rider has been confirmed dead and another sustained varying degree of injuries during multiple auto crashes along the Apapa-Oshodi expressway in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The accident involved a Mack truck with number plate EPE-516YA, conveying a 40ft container, a truck with an unknown number plate that was conveying a large number of vehicle engines, and two commercial motorcyclists.
Eyewitnesses narrated that the truck conveying quantities of vehicle engines had suffered mechanical error (brake failure), while on motion leading to a collision with an on-coming articulated truck and the two motorcycles.Â
The Guild gathered that the impact of the collision led to the fall of the ill-fated truck laden with several vehicle engines, that were later scattered on the highway, thereby obstructing vehicular movement.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the auto crash on Wednesday, linked the auto crash to the mechanical fault suffered by the truck.
Oke-Osanyintolu added that the body of the deceased commercial motorcyclist has been deposited at the mortuary while the injured rider has been rushed to the Police station for medical care.
According to him, the strewn impediments (vehicle engines) has been evacuated off the road with a Hiab – The accident vehicles trucks has been successfully recovered off the road with the aid of a heavy-duty tow truck and towed to LASTMA yard- Road has been set free for safe vehicular activities thereby ensuring free vehicular movement”.
