President Muhammadu Buhari and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, have expressed heartfelt congratulations to one of the country’s athletes, Tobi Amusan, for winning gold during final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in United States.

They also commended the female athlete, who became the first Nigerian to win gold at the world championship, for setting a new world record during the semifinals of the same event.

Both personalities joined millions that had been congratulating Amusan through separate statements released on Monday after the female athlete was decorated with her winning goal medal, increasing the country’s medal record at the championship to two including the silver won by Ese Brume in Long Jump.

While joining Nigerians and sports lovers globally in celebrating this outstanding feat by a compatriot and two-time African Games champion, who in one night stunned the athletics world with her superlative and stellar performance, Buhari commended Amusan for making the Nigerian national anthem resonate again from the international podium.

He added that the achievement has left everyone in the country and Nigerians abroad with excitement and unforgettable memories of tears of joy and triumph; hope and victory; incredulity and belief.

Buhari, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stressed that Amusan’s legendary career and achievements of the golden girl will continue to inspire the upcoming generations of Nigerian athletes to achieve spectacular success.

The President, meanwhile, commended Brume for representing Nigeria with honour and pride, winning a silver medal in the Women’s long jump event.

The President lauds Team Nigeria for displaying courage, integrity, and good sportsmanship on the world stage, proving that with hard work and determination, success is achievable.

Earlier, Abiodun, who hinted that Amusan was his adopted daughter, said that everyone in Ogun is proud of her success and has started to inspire many to intensify their preparation.

According to him, “We congratulate and rejoice with a proud daughter of Ogun State, whom I adopted some months back to support her career, Ms. Tobi Amusan on her world record-breaking (12.12sec) gold victory in Women’s 100M Hurdles. As a State, we are proud of your success and wish you more greater heights in the years ahead”.
