A resident and a vigilante have been killed, while eight others sustained injuries after Boko Haram insurgents attacked a vigilante post in Yobe State.
The assault took place at a busy market hub in Geidam town, the headquarters of Geidam Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen opened fire on residents buying and selling at the market, killing a vigilante member and a civilian.
“They parked their vehicles in the bush, which allowed them to move undetected into the area,” a resident told newsmen on Wednesday. “A vigilante was killed instantly, and a civilian at the mini market also lost their life amid the chaos.”
Another trader indicated that the civilian’s death may have occurred during the stampede as people fled, rather than directly from gunfire. Several others were hospitalized after sustaining injuries while escaping the scene.
Residents expressed fear over recurring attacks and called for increased security measures to protect both civilians and local vigilantes.
Attempts to reach the Assistant Director, Public Relations Unit of Operation Hadin Kai, Sector 2, Damaturu, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
