Benue Gov. award scholarship to slain officers children

The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has awarded scholarships to twelve children of deceased police officers in the state as part of efforts to support families of officers who died in the line of duty.

The governor said the gesture was aimed at honouring the sacrifices made by the fallen officers while ensuring that their children continue to have access to quality education despite the loss of their parents.

He noted that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel and their families.

The scholarship awards were presented yesterday, during a ceremony held at Government College, Makurdi, where the governor formally handed over the scholarships to the beneficiaries.

The event was attended by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Emenari Ifeanyi Innocent, alongside members of the Command Management Team and representatives of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA).

While presenting the awards, Governor Alia expressed sympathy to the families of the fallen officers and reassured them of the state government’s commitment to supporting them.

He noted that children represent the future of society and emphasized that education remains a vital tool for shaping responsible leaders and building a better society.

The governor further stated that the sacrifices made by the deceased officers in service to the nation would never be forgotten, adding that supporting the education of their children is a modest way of honouring their bravery and dedication.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Mohammed Yakubu, commended the governor for the gesture, describing it as a compassionate move that demonstrates the state government’s concern for the welfare of families left behind by officers who sacrificed their lives while protecting lives and property.

The Benue State Police Command expressed deep appreciation to the governor for the initiative, noting that such support would serve as motivation for serving officers who continue to risk their lives daily to maintain peace and security across the state.

The command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, while pledging to sustain collaboration with the Benue State Government and other stakeholders to ensure safety and security across the state.
