Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has assented to a bill establishing the Labe College of Nursing Sciences in Gboko, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding educational opportunities in the state.
The governor described the establishment of the college as a strategic investment in human capital development, noting that it will bring specialized medical training closer to communities and help address the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals.
The bill was signed into law on Wednesday as part of the administration’s efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and enhance access to quality education.
A statement announcing the development was signed by Solomon Iorpev, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication.
Alia said the institution will produce highly trained nurses and midwives, improve patient care, and help reduce maternal and infant mortality, particularly in underserved rural communities.
He added that the college would also stimulate economic growth through job creation, increased commercial activities, and infrastructure development in Gboko and its environs.
According to the governor, graduates of the institution will provide clinical services and play key roles in public health education, preventive care, and community health initiatives.
Alia described the development as a major milestone in his administration’s vision of building a healthier and more prosperous Benue State, stressing that quality healthcare remains critical to sustainable development.
He called on stakeholders, including prospective students, parents, community leaders, and the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, to support the initiative and maximise its benefits.
