Bauchi Govt. shuts down schools over insecurity

By Awoniyi Ademide

As northern states face escalating terror attacks, the Bauchi State Government has ordered an immediate halt to all academic activities to protect teachers and students from potential harm.

The move follows intelligence received from security operatives warning of active threats against soft targets such as schools, prompting swift intervention from the state.

The announcement came through a directive issued late Sunday by the Bauchi State Ministry of Education, confirming that all public and private schools, including federal government colleges, must suspend operations.

“No government can stand by while children remain exposed to danger,” the Bauchi State Ministry of Education spokesman, Jalaludeen Usman, said during a broadcast, warning that the risk profile around learning centres had grown too grave to ignore.

Usman explained that the order emerged after an extensive review of security reports and consultations with agencies monitoring the region, adding that the decision is a necessary measure to prevent the loss of lives.

According to him, allowing academic activities to continue under the current climate would be irresponsible, noting that safeguarding students now outweighs every other consideration.

“Safety must come first,” he said, adding that the atmosphere was far too volatile to keep schools open.

The government urged parents and school proprietors to remain calm as authorities intensify efforts to stabilise the situation, assuring that updates would be provided as developments unfold and that reopening would be considered once the security environment improves.

It further appealed to residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity, noting that collective cooperation could help avert looming dangers.

Bauchi now joins a growing list of northern states adopting emergency measures as persistent attacks threaten to further erode Nigeria’s fragile education system and development outlook.
