Bandits kill policeman, four residents in Benue

A police officer alongside four residents have been killed following an attack by bandits on a community in Benue State.

The terrorists carried out a late night attack on the community and got into a heated gun battle with the residents which resulted in the death of the deceased while others were severely injured and needing medical attention.

The Police confirmed that the police figure, an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the 13 Police Mobile Force, Makurdi, was on special duty during the incident, adding that it received an urgent report that the bandits had launched coordinated attacks against both security operatives and civilians in Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, Edet Udeme, on Wednesday, said, “The attack resulted in a gun battle during which the police officer sustained fatal injuries. The deceased persons have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary.”

The security agency stated that it had deployed a joint team of operatives alongside other security agencies to secure the community and carry out search operations to apprehend the terrorists and prevent further violence.

The command also extended condolences to the bereaved families and residents of Abande, assuring that decisive measures are underway to restore peace and hold the perpetrators accountable.
