Suspected bandits have killed an inspector of the Nigeria Police Force in Oyo State following an ambush on a patrol team at the Budo Masalasi border post area of the state.
It was gathered that the patrol team was on routine security duty when it was waylaid by armed assailants, who opened fire on the officers.
The victim, Aliu Oluwole, reportedly succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the exchange of gunfire, while the attackers fled the scene with his service rifle.
Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the gunmen were wounded by return fire from the police, prompting an extensive manhunt to apprehend the suspects and recover the stolen AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Oyo State Police Commandās Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said security operatives had intensified efforts to track down the assailants.
āPreliminary findings reveal that some of the attackers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently being pursued by security operatives,ā Ayanlade said.
He urged members of the public to assist security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting any individuals with gunshot wounds, those seeking medical attention under suspicious circumstances, or persons exhibiting suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station or security agency.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, with specialised units deployed to analyse evidence and ensure justice for the slain officer.
The attack comes amid recent security concerns in the state, including the interception of a truck carrying suspected explosives in Saki, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance against armed groups.
Police have reassured residents that reinforced security measures are in place across the state, pledging dismantle criminal networks and restore peace in affected communities.
