No fewer than 50 women have been abducted by suspected armed men following an attack on Chibauna community in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The attack, which also claimed the lives of two villagers and left several others with varying degrees of injury, has heightened fear among residents, especially as it occurred despite recent peace agreements in the area.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community late on Sunday, firing sporadically and rustling a large number of livestock, including cattle and sheep.
Confirming the incident, a local councillor, Abdurasheed, told journalists that the gunmen āinvaded the community in large numbers, creating chaos and panic among residents.ā
He said two people were killed during the attack, while others sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Abdurasheed further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to identify the abducted women and trace the route taken by the attackers.
He appealed to the military and other security agencies to urgently deploy additional personnel to the area and intensify rescue operations to secure the release of the abducted women.
The Guild reports that the incident has reignited concerns among residents, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of the reported peace arrangements and underscoring the persistent insecurity in parts of Katsina State.
