Lawmakers suspend Australian Senator over improper dressing

By Felix Kuyinu

Australian Senator, Pauline Hanson, has been suspended from attending plenary over her choice of outfit to the legislative House which was termed inappropriate.

The House suspended Hanson for seven sitting days after she wore a burqa to the parliament as a political prop in her quest for a ban over Muslim garment in the country’s public places which has resulted in criticism from the lawmakers.

The legislator was denied the permission of formally introducing a bill to aid her quest after the condemnation of her fellow House representatives who all regarded request as a racist act, after which a chamber’s regulation  was read leading to her sanctioning.

Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, on Tuesday, stated that the costume alongside her agitation against the religious sect is a disrepute to the chamber and also to Australia, calling for a punishment issued on Hanson.

”Senator Hanson’s hateful and shallow pageantry tears at our social fabric and I believe it makes Australia weaker, and it also has cruel consequences for many of our most vulnerable.

”Senator Hanson mocked and vilified an entire faith, a faith observed by nearly a million Australians. I have never seen someone be so disrespectful to the parliament in this manner.”

The beleaguered legislator stood by her views on the costume, arguing that there was no dress code for the parliament.

”If you can wear a helmet into the bank or any other venues where they tell you to take it off, why is the burqa any different?,” she stated.

”I’ll stand my ground and what I believe in, I will continue to do so and it will be the people to judge me.”
