Ahead of September gubernatorial election in Edo State, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has activated over 150 independent support groups with a mandate to mobilise and campaign vigorously for the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who would contesting in the poll as People Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer.
The groups, Independent Atiku Support Groups, responsibility was to ensure that Obaseki, having emerged as PDP’s governorship candidate at concluded of primary elections in Benin, get necessary support that would guarantee his victory at the poll.
The Deputy Director, Atiku Support Group/Mobilization, Oladimeji Fabiyi, confirmed that Atiku had giving directives that over 150 of his campaign groups should match straight to Edo to rally support for Obaseki ahead of forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Fabiyi, during an interview with The Guild on Sunday, said that the aim of the former vice president was to ensure a formidable machinery was put in place to campaign and facilitate victory for Obaseki during election.
He disclosed that Atiku passed directive for immediate activation of his campaign groups in preparation for the forthcoming governorship election as party of his contributions to the poll.
According to him, the former vice president has directed that all Atiku independent support groups in Edo state should be activated with immediate effect as part of mobilization for the victory of Godwin Obaseki, the governorship candidate of the PDP.
The deputy director of the defunct group said that Atiku considers it expedient to put in place winning structures and machinery that will guarantee total victory for the party in Edo State.
He said: “You know we need to complete the circle in the south south region that naturally and originally belonged the PDP.
“Having received the directive with joy and enthusiasm, I have no doubt that all our support groups in Edo State will be very glad to receive this news and run with the directive of Atiku Abubakar for the benefit of Governor Obaseki and our great party in Edo State”, Fabiyi added.
