Army kills two terrorists in Zamfara

The Nigerian Army has intensified its counterterrorism campaign, killing two suspected terrorists and seizing weapons and communication equipment during a successful ambush operation carried out by troops.

The operation was conducted by troops of the 1 Brigade under Operation FANSAN YANMA along the Gada Maya–Makakari road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State at about 2:55 p.m. on March 25.

According to the Army, the operation also resulted in the recovery of several items believed to have been used by the armed group.

Among the materials retrieved were one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 55 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a Baofeng communication radio, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle.

An Army source on Thursday explained that the encounter followed intelligence indicating the movement of armed elements along a known route frequently used by terrorist groups.

Acting on the information, troops carried out reconnaissance and strategically positioned themselves to intercept the suspects.

“Troops engaged the terrorists in a brief exchange of gunfire after contact was established,” the Army source said.

“Two of the insurgents were neutralised during the confrontation, while others fled the scene under pressure from the soldiers.”

The source further noted that after the firefight, soldiers combed the surrounding area to ensure no additional threats remained and to recover equipment abandoned by the fleeing attackers.
