The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports that 20 of its soldiers were killed by terrorists in the Northeast, describing the circulating claims as false and misleading propaganda intended to cause public panic.
The Army clarified that materials in circulation, including photographs of deceased soldiers, are outdated and were originally published years ago.
“At no point recently has Operation HADIN KAI lost 20 soldiers. These materials do not reflect the present operational situation on the ground,” Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, said.
The Army emphasised that insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), are currently in severe disarray following sustained, coordinated air and ground operations.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, troops have killed scores of insurgents and seized weapons, ammunition, and logistical supplies in recent offensives.
Significant actions include engagements at Miyanti, Gajigana, and Gajiram, where insurgents attempting to regroup were overwhelmed.
At Chabbal checkpoint, security forces intercepted ₦37 million intended to finance terrorist activities, while operations in Komala led to the killing of 16 insurgents and the destruction of weapons and supplies.
Uba urged the public and media to verify reports from credible sources before sharing content that could amplify terrorist propaganda:
“Citizens should remain calm, continue their lawful activities, and support security agencies with timely and actionable information.”
The Joint Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace in the Northeast.
