Army clears air on Taraba university student arrest

By Mary Odeh

The 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has dismissed reports claiming that its troops unlawfully arrested a student of Taraba State University, Yebsonya Gamboro, within the school premises.

The Brigade described the social media reports as false and intended to create unnecessary tension between the military and the university community.

The clarification was contained in a statement released yesterday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad.

According to the statement, “Gamboro was not among the students initially questioned on Friday, October 10, 2025, for wearing military camouflage during a social event held on campus. The students involved were released after questioning.

“However, further investigation revealed that the student was later seen wearing military attire, which led to an altercation with another student, Emmanuel Manga, a 200-level Computer Science student and serving military personnel (Ex-Boy).

“The confrontation escalated after Gamboro allegedly called friends to assault Manga, during which his mobile phone went missing.

“Some of Mr. Manga’s colleagues subsequently brought Mr. Gamboro to the Brigade for questioning. He was released the following morning and handed over to the University Security Officer for further investigation and administrative action to recover the missing phone.”

Lieutenant Muhammad reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights, and a peaceful relationship with Taraba State University and other institutions in the state.

“The Brigade does not condone any act of indiscipline or abuse of authority and urges the public to always verify information before dissemination,” the statement read.

The Army further reminded the public that, under Sections 110(1) and 251 of the Criminal Code Act (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria), it is an offence for civilians to wear military uniforms or accoutrements, warning that such acts are punishable under Nigerian law.
