The Nigerian Army has recorded a major victory in its campaign against banditry with the capture of a notorious bandit ally accused of terrorising communities across Taraba and Benue States.
The suspect, believed to be a key figure in the deadly “Full Fire” bandit gang, was taken into custody following an intelligence-led operation that disrupted his movements and foiled planned attacks.
As learnt, the suspect, 35-year-old Saawuan Wuaiyolna, played a critical role in monitoring military activities to support assaults and kidnappings orchestrated by the gang.
Wuaiyolna, who hails from Benue State, was intercepted at Takum Junction in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).
His arrest was executed by personnel of the Forward Operating Base in Wukari after surveillance teams tracked his movements using credible intelligence.
Confirming the arrest on Friday, the military revealed that Wuaiyolna was caught with a motorcycle he allegedly intended to sell in Wukari, though investigators suspect it was being used to support criminal activities.
The military stated that his apprehension sends a strong message that its counter-banditry operations are gaining momentum and yielding results.
A military officer, who spoke to journalists after the arrest, described it as “a significant breakthrough against the Full Fire syndicate,” adding that the gang has been responsible for repeated raids on rural settlements.
“This operation is another clear step towards neutralising the gang’s influence,” the officer said. “Our troops remain vigilant, and we are determined to restore peace to these communities.”
Meanwhile, the army has assured residents that despite the challenging terrain and persistent threats, its forces remain fully committed to protecting lives and preventing the region from falling back into fear and terror caused by bandits.
