The chances of a former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, to become the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate ahead of next year’s gubernatorial election has received a boost after chieftain of the party, Lanre Aregbesola, declared a total support for Oni’s move to become Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s successor.
Aregbesola said that Oni is the only person that could redeem the state from its present condition of backwardness and make Ekiti better as well as surpass other southwest states particularly on infrastructures.
He stated this during the 2021 harvest Thanksgiving of Cherubim and Seraphim church, Ilupeju-Ekiti ahead of next year’s gubernatorial election in the state.
Aregbesola urged the clerics and members of the church to support Oni’s vision which was aimed at attracting investors and boosting development across the state.
The PDP chieftain, who was conferred as Majekobaje of the church yesterday, said that Oni is the only tested candidate and that his administration would improve welfare of every citizens especially Ekiti workers.
Meanwhile, Aregbesola, who was represented by Ojo Olakunle, educated the spiritual leaders in the state on why they should join Oni’s campaign to rescue Ekiti from those he alleged had slowed down the wheel of progress.
The engagement with clerics came barely four days after Oni joined the gubernatorial race, a decade after leaving office following an Appeal court ruling that removed him from office on 15 October 2010.
Oni indicated his readiness to join the race for 2022 governorship election on the platform of the Ekiti State chapter of the PDP after obtaining the expression of interest and nomination forms.
